Principles of ultrasonic pulse
velocity test
The upv test measures the time of travel of an ultrasonic pulse passing through
the concrete. The high upv test and lower time of travel indicate good quality
of concrete in terms of density, uniformity, homogeneity, etc.
The travel time of electronic pulses is measured when they travel from the transmitter to
the receiver. The length of the path travelled by pulses is divided by the travel time
of pulses which gives the average velocity of wave propagation. The pulse velocity is
correlated to the strength of concrete. The higher the pulse velocity, the greater is
the strength of concrete.
Applications of ultrasonic pulse velocity and rh test:
- Detect poor patches, internal flaws, cracks, and honeycombing in terms of grading
output.
- The rh test is carried to assess the approximate in situ concrete compressive
strength of concrete structures.
Advantages of ultrasonic pulse velocity test:
- The testing equipment for concrete provides faster and more accurate results and
uses ultrasonic pulses.
- Without causing any destruction or damage to the concrete element this test can be
conducted.
- At the same time, it may help save money and time.
- In concrete, ultrasonic pulses also provide a reliable measure of the changes.
